About "Cardology" Word

First Use in 1934

What we are describing as the study of the ancient mystical science of playing cards is spelled C-A-R-D-O-L-O-G-Y.  It is NOT cardiology, a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the heart.

Our research shows that Los Angeles, California astrologer Jan Eric (aka Jamie Brand Erickson, Joy Erickson) was the first to use this term in 1934 as part of his work "Astro-cardology" and copyrighted it with the Library of Congress on March 31st.

Jan Eric also advertised "ASTRO-CARDOLOGY" in The Billboard in July 1948 for his "fortune-telling game" for $1.25 per set.

First Books in early 1900s with "Cardology" Titles

With several books published in the early 1900s, including professional magician Great Ovette's book ODDS and ENDS in CARD-OLOGY published in 1937, it is clear that the word "cardology" belongs to playing cards, not greeting cards, sports trading cards, college flash cards, or even computer smart cards.

In 1941, M.F. Zens published his book, The Cardology of Tomorrow: The First Real Treatise Covering a Radical Departure in Card Magic and a Number of Effects Performed Therewith, about performing magic tricks. Later in 1999, M.F. Chance Wyatt authored his book Cardology: The True Meaninq of the Cards about the meaning of each playing card used in cartomancy.

More about the word "Cardology"

In 1974, Donalie Fitzgerald, Cardologer and author of Edith Randall's Your Place in the Cards, also used the term "CARDOLOGY" in her book about today's system of Cardology. It can easily be seen on her chart of birth dates and their associated cards on page 16.

In the book Spiritual Concepts for a New Age: Psychic Serenity in the Human Experience published in 2012, author Connie Johnson also used the term "Cardology."  On page  259, she wrote, "Cardology is an ancient system that is based on what has evolved into the everyday deck of playing cards. Many believe that this mystical system has its origins thousands of years ago, prior even to the ancient Egyptian dynasties."

Astrologer/Cardologer and International Association of Cardology Founding Member and Historian, lain McLaren-Owens of Astro-Cards, has used the term "Cardology" in his work too. Two of his books published in 2013 are titled Magian Cardology System - Card Chart Tables and Magian Cardology Readings Spreads with Explanatory Text + Cycles Date Tables.

In 2015, Cardologer and International Association of Cardology Founding Member, Stefan G. Meyer PhD of Karma-Seeker.com, published his book, Mysteries of Cardology.

Since then, numerous classes, videos, and websites have embraced "Cardology' as the umbrella term that describes today's study of the ancient, mystical science of playing cards and our brand of divination, transformation and self-understanding. Having one word to convey what this system is was long overdue as there are too many names currently used, making it hard for customers, students and even practitioners to be able to find this information online and offline.
